Accessibility

The Student Space website has been designed and developed to be accessible to the widest possible audience.

We are committed to designing, testing and delivering all content on the website to WCAG 2.0 AA compliance where possible. The standards we test against are taken from the technical standard Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 (WCAG), published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

Some of the specific actions we take include:

  • We try to write all our content in plain English, to make sure that it is useful to as many people as possible.
  • Content is separated by appropriate headings for ease of reading by humans and screen reading software.
  • Hyperlinks are as descriptive as possible, describing their purpose and location as necessary.
  • We avoid using text in images where possible, and always try to include text to describe image content.

We use guidance from the Readability Guidelines project on language, hyperlinks and headers.

Technical compliance

We try our best to ensure our site works with a range of technologies, but we can’t commit to testing every browser, operating system version or mobile handset type.
We focus on testing with modern browsers and more recent technology, as they are the most commonly used and provide the best accessibility support for the user. We test our website with Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari, across mobile and desktop devices.
